A Visual Introduction To JavaScript Programming

Course Description

Five 3-hour Sessions

Learn the basics of computer programming through JavaScript, one of the world’s most popular programming languages. We will use Processing.js, a tool that allows JavaScript programmers to render colored shapes and create engaging animations and visualizations.

Recommended Ages

  • Grades 6 – 8


No prior coding experience necessary. Creativity and an interest in technology are recommended. Come excited and ready to learn!

Students Will Learn To:

  • Declare variables
  • Call and create functions
  • Use logical statements
  • Handle user events and add interactivity
  • Present their work to peers


  • Day 1: Processing.js functions, colors, and shapes
  • Day 2: Variables, math expressions, control flow, and animation
  • Day 3: Events and user interaction
  • Day 4: Loops, arrays, and starting of final projects
  • Day 5: Feedback, final touches and presentation of projects

Instructional Format

The class size is small (six students per session) and the curriculum can adapt based on individual needs. Questions can be asked at any time. There will be frequent checks for student understanding through oral review and virtual mini-quizzes. Time will be allocated for students to work on individual projects and ask for help. Creativity is highly encouraged!

You Will Need

  • A wifi capable laptop (Mac, Windows, or Chromebook recommended) and charger
